Double helix in doubleface 3/1 broken twill

double helixThis was my first attempt at double-face 3/1 broken twill. The pattern was inspired by a photo of a similar band woven by Torben Dibber at the web site of a Danish card-weaving group (you’ll find the photo far down this very long page). Later, I learned that the pattern was adapted from a band found at an archaeological dig at Elisenhof, Germany. The original band dates from the 10th century A.D.

5/2 Perle cotton. 25 pattern cards, 3 border threads on each side.

  1. Mahalo, Mahalo. Your generous sharing and enthusiasm is heartwarming. I have been an artisan all of my life in some media, including backstrap, tapestry and floor loom. Card weaving is a new adventure and your generous information is unveiling the mysteries. I have been making Viking weave, or Etruscan weave, as I learned the technique, for several years. I have been trying to develop a loom for wire that affords multiple sheds. I believe card weaving is the answer. Your explanations are the clearest I have seen. Am making my first set of cards from hard wood, though I fear the wire will wear the holes. Copper for the cards seems too heavy. I will keep you posted. Mahalo, Alynne
