Terms and notation — the inconsistent literature

Since its popularization of tablet weaving by Mary Atwater in the 1920’s, the craft’s literature has been remarkably inconsistent in its use of terms, notation and conventions. Often books contain hidden assumptions that confound the beginner.

This series of articles will help beginners make sense of the literature. I’ll first describe an emerging standard for terms and notation, and then compare popular literature with that standard. Equipped with that knowledge, the tablet weaver will understand how to translate a resource’s terms, notation and diagrams into the standard, and be able to weave what the author intended.
